Fabio Anfossi exhibits in our gallery from 2026.
Fabio Anfossi was born in Italy in 1974.
Laminates are not merely functional supports but the outcome of highly sophisticated research: surfaces developed through complex processes in which advanced chemical, technical and formal expertise converge. Their qualities are not only aesthetic but also structural. Gloss, elasticity, chromatic depth and the way they interact with light are the result of meticulous engineering and design. The surface is never neutral: it reflects, absorbs, repels and reacts. In this sense, the material is not simply used; it establishes itself as an active counterpart.
Fabio Anfossi’s work emerges precisely from this dialogue—not from the desire to impose a form, but from the necessity of engaging with a material that is already highly defined in itself.
The artistic shift occurs when this material autonomy is acknowledged: the laminate ceases to function as a mere medium and becomes an operative field. It is not employed to represent something, but activated through tensions, twists and folds—not a composition by addition, but a construction through deformation. The surface is pushed until it reveals configurations that were not explicitly visible in its original state. In this sense, the work does not impose form from the outside but uncovers possibilities already latent within the material. Torsion does not generate rupture, but rather a controlled redefinition: a balance between integrity and transformation.
More indirectly, the work resonates with the investigations into surface developed in Italy during the 1960s, particularly the extroflexed works of Enrico Castellani and Agostino Bonalumi.
He attended the Art High School in Florence, where he studied art history under Professor Lorenzo Gnocchi, a historian of Modern Art. He later pursued studies in Art History at the University of Florence while simultaneously attending the Free Nude School at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.
His academic background was deeply shaped by the Renaissance, which laid the foundations of his early aesthetic vision. Alongside drawing, he developed a strong interest in photography, finding an important point of reference in the work of Ansel Adams, whose use of light and dialogue between image, perception and formal structure profoundly influenced his stylistic approach.
Between 1995 and 1997, he attended the lectures of Carlo Del Bravo and produced his first works combining theoretical and cultural research with drawing and photography. During the same period, while collaborating with professional photographic laboratories, he created his first experimental double-exposure photographs and, in 1995, participated in his first group exhibition at the Florence Biennale.
In the late 1990s, he began collaborating professionally with web and advertising agencies as an image maker and digital artist. The systems of numbers, codes and digital structures characteristic of this environment introduced a new form of complexity that naturally found its way into his artistic practice. The emergence of the Internet was perceived as an unavoidable sign of the times—a transformative force with which art, as a reflection of the contemporary world, could not fail to engage.
From 1998 onward, he worked with Internet agencies across fields ranging from graphic design and animation to advanced photo retouching, web design and e-commerce. It was above all the creative dimension of this context that encouraged new connections and gradually brought him closer to the fashion industry.
In 2003, he began collaborating with advertising agencies and fashion photographers, assisting in photographic production and post-production. During this period he worked with Lorenzo Poccianti, known for his portraits of internationally renowned figures from the American entertainment industry, carrying out sophisticated digital retouching based on principles comparable to aesthetic surgery.
He made his debut among emerging designers at Pitti Immagine Uomo and, in 2008, met and collaborated with Pauric Sweeney, participating in projects ranging from creative development to industrial production. This experience introduced him to the worlds of luxury leather goods, tanneries and technologically advanced synthetic laminates.
His encounter with laminates within an industrial and technical context proved decisive. These materials assumed a central and inspirational role, becoming the driving force behind his first mirrored PVC works and later experiments with other advanced materials that expanded and evolved his sculptural research into volume and surface.
Between 2008 and 2014, alongside his collaborations within the fashion industry, he established relationships with artistic foundries specializing in monumental sculpture. The discovery of metals and their ability to evoke fluidity rather than rigidity generated a formal tension that became a defining element of his research.
He also collaborated with several Natural History Museums, including the Museo della Specola in Florence.
Today, Fabio Anfossi continues to pursue his artistic research while participating in performances, solo exhibitions and group exhibitions.
